Gentle and Effective Orthodontic Care for Kids at Glow Orthodontics

Early interceptive orthodontic treatment is typically recommended for children between the ages of 7 and 11, to ‘intercept’ any orthodontic problems that if left untreated can have irreversible effects on the developing teeth and face.

The exact timing of treatment may vary depending on individual needs and developmental factors. Early orthodontic treatment aims to correct or prevent various dental and orthodontic issues:

1. Correction of Bite Problems

Early orthodontic treatment can address bite problems such as overbites (when the upper teeth protrude too far forward), underbites (when the lower teeth jut out ahead of the upper teeth), and crossbites (when the upper and lower teeth do not align properly when biting).

Orthodontic treatment can guide the growth of the jaw to ensure proper alignment and facial balance as your child continues to develop.

2. Space Management

A short course of interceptive orthodontic treatment can help guide the natural eruption and alignment of adult teeth. By identifying and addressing spacing and crowding issues early, orthodontists can often make room for adult teeth to erupt naturally, reducing the need for tooth extraction later in the treatment process.

3. Improved Aesthetics and Confidence

Correcting orthodontic issues early can improve a child’s smile and overall facial appearance, boosting their self-esteem and confidence.

This can be extremely important for a young child’s psycho-social development.

4. Habit correction

Early orthodontic treatment can address habits like thumb-sucking and poor tongue posture, which if left untreated, can lead to dental problems, including misalignment of teeth and jaws that are much more severe when your child has matured.

5. Airway Improvement

Sleep disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnoea is a medical condition that can affect children. At Glow Orthodontics, Dr. Jessica Yeo uses a scientific approach using a comprehensive screening questionnaire and by working with a multi-disciplinary team of sleep and ENT physicians to accurately diagnose and treat airway conditions that may affect your child.

6. Prevent More Invasive Treatment

Early intervention can reduce the need for more extensive orthodontic treatment, such as surgery to correct severe untreated orthodontic problems in the future. It can also make the later phases of orthodontic treatment shorter and less complex.
